Extendable Dining Tables: Make Room for Christmas and Everyday Life

Christmas has a way of bringing everyone to the table. There are extra place settings, favourite dishes to share and guests who stay for one more conversation. A table that suits your household perfectly throughout the year can suddenly feel a little small.

An extendable dining table gives you room to welcome more people while keeping your dining space comfortable for everyday life. You can enjoy a smaller table for daily meals, then extend it when family and friends arrive.

At 7MAGOK, we handcraft solid wood dining tables in our Devon workshop, with made-to-order options to help you find the right fit for your home.

Why choose an extendable dining table for Christmas?

For many households, Christmas dinner is one of the largest meals they host all year. Buying a large fixed table for those occasional gatherings can mean giving up valuable space during the other months.

An extendable table lets your dining area adapt. Keep it compact for breakfast, family meals or working from home, then open it up for festive dinners and weekend visitors.

The extra surface is useful beyond seating. It gives you more room for serving dishes, glasses and the little touches that make a gathering feel special.

When choosing a table, consider both its everyday and fully extended dimensions. It should work comfortably in your room in each arrangement.

Round or rectangular: which works best for festive gatherings?

The best shape depends on your room and how you like to host.

Round extendable tables for sociable meals

A round table creates a welcoming setting where everyone faces towards the centre. It can work particularly well in square dining areas and kitchen spaces where you want a softer shape.

Many round extendable designs become oval when opened, giving you extra length for guests while retaining curved ends.

A round extendable oak table is a lovely option if you want an intimate everyday setting with the flexibility to host a larger Christmas meal. Check the extended shape, base position and recommended seating capacity of the particular design you choose. See our round extending dining tables & dining sets.

Rectangular extendable tables for longer rooms

A rectangular table often suits a long dining room or open-plan kitchen-diner. It provides a clear layout for place settings and can work well with a combination of chairs and benches.

For this kind of space, explore the KANTAR options in our dining table collection. Consider the table’s width as well as its length: festive meals often need space for serving bowls and dishes between the place settings.

How much room do you need for Christmas guests?

Start with the number of people who use your table every day, then think about the gatherings you realistically host.

As a starting point, allow around 50 cm of table edge per person, with more room for wider chairs or a generous place setting. Seating capacity also depends on the table’s shape, leg positions and base, so check the guidance for your chosen design.

Measure the room with the table fully extended. Aim for around 90 cm between the table edge and a wall or other furniture, allowing more where people need to walk behind occupied chairs.

Before ordering, mark out the table’s fully extended dimensions on your floor with masking tape. Arrange your chairs around the outline to check that doors and cupboards open freely and walkways remain clear. Benches offer flexible seating too: position them against a wall while the table is compact, then bring them to the table when extra guests arrive.

A comfortable Christmas table gives people enough room to enjoy the meal and get up easily between courses.

Chairs, benches or a mixture of both?

Your seating makes a difference to how well an extendable table works.

Chairs provide individual places and let you choose the comfort and support that suit your household. If you plan to bring out extra chairs for Christmas, check their width and whether they fit between the table legs.

Benches can create a relaxed, communal feel, particularly alongside rectangular tables. Some can tuck beneath the tabletop when not in use, although this depends on the bench dimensions and the table’s base.

A mixture of chairs and a bench can work beautifully. Plan the seating around the table’s actual measurements, giving every guest a comfortable place.

Style your festive table with space to spare

A solid wood tabletop brings warmth and texture to a Christmas setting. A simple runner, place setting mats, cloth napkins and a few seasonal decorations can create a welcoming atmosphere while leaving the wood visible.

Keep centrepieces low enough for guests to see each other, and leave space for dishes to be passed around. If the table is full, a nearby sideboard or serving surface can hold additional bowls and drinks - a kitchen island or counter is perfect for this.

Use suitable mats and trivets beneath hot dishes, wipe up spills promptly and follow our care advice. Keep candles in stable holders and protect the surface from heat and wax.

Choose a table you will enjoy throughout the year

Christmas may be the reason you start looking, but your dining table will be part of daily life long after the decorations come down.

Think about how you will use it during an ordinary week. Is it a place for family meals, homework, creative projects or working from home? Do you prefer a round setting for conversation, or a rectangular layout with room for a bench?

The right table should be easy to live with in its smaller form and practical to extend when you need it.
